Obituary for Edward Murtagh

Edward Murtagh, affectionately known as "Hosh," 59, of North Arlington, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2017. A wake will be held at the Parow Funeral Home at 185 Ridge Road in North Arlington, on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. Visitation hours are from 5-9 PM. A private celebration of his life will be held at his home in North Arlington for family and close friends at a later date. Edward was married to the love of his life, Susan McGrane Murtagh in 1987. Susan passed away in 2005. Edward was born on August 6, 1957 and was a long-time resident of North Arlington, who graduated from North Arlington High School with the class of 1976. Edward was a true Renaissance man with a wide spectrum of interests ranging from the fine arts to technology. At an early age, his mother, Antoinette encouraged his interest in music, and Edward became a gifted guitarist, bassist, and singer. He was a member of many local bands in the late 70s and 80s including the musically eclectic band Matrix. His bands played at North Arlington Street festivals and local music clubs. Edward was also an insightful and playful visual artist who could use any material to make the world more beautiful. He could paint, sketch, sculpt, and design. He was also a pioneer in computer graphics and website design, and was the co-founder of Upward Computer Systems, a computer service and graphics company. He was always interested in learning about new technology and using that technology in art and music. Edward was a phenomenal cook, and could often be found browsing Corrado's, Paterson's markets, local produce stores and green markets for the freshest and best ingredients. He was a passionate proponent of serving food hot, proper use of salt, and rare meat. He and his wife Susan loved to garden and always improved meals with some fresh rosemary, sage and parsley from their backyard garden. Edward and Susan were lovers of nature and enjoyed their numerous trips to the Cape Cod Seashore, Badlands and Yellowstone National Parks. He also appreciated his local Meadowlands, whether he was spotting eagles overhead and blue herons amongst the reeds with the Bergen County Audubon Society or taking long walks through the meadows. More recently, Edward most relished the role of eccentric uncle; he was the master. Edward could tell a funny story, pick up his guitar and sing a song, and inspire, entertain, and engage each of his honorary nieces and nephews. Jon Luc and Mia Zentner, John, Chris, Craig and Kate Bellucci, and Chase and Ellis Jennings, brought him incredible joy in the last decade of his life. For 26 years, he worked for the Great Lakes Paper Company in Clifton, working his way through the shipping and sales departments, eventually rising to become Assistant Plant Manager. He concluded his professional career working in customer service and sales for Primex in Garfield, NJ. Edward maintained wonderful friendships with co-workers from both companies, and was known as a character on and off the job, with an incredible work ethic. Edward was the husband of the late Susan McGrane Murtagh, the son of the late Antoinette Murtagh (nee DiPace) and Edward Murtagh. The brother of Joe and his wife Rose, the nephew of Aunt Millie and Uncle Frank Chillemi, the cousin of Francine Chillemi, Marie, Gina and David Vitagliano and the late Alan Vitagliano, the brother-in-law of Joanne Ogilvie, the uncle of Christina Kurtz and Megan and Emma Ogilvie. Edward will be missed and cherished by dear friends, Lisa and Scott Zentner, Michael Livolsi and Kate Donnelly, John and Kim Fugel, Patricia Tricarico, Frank Ippolito, Chris Bellucci, Gregory Brissett, Gail Somers, and many others. In Hosh's honor, in lieu of flowers, buy some fresh, local ingredients and gather your loved ones to prepare, share and enjoy a great meal... and each other.
